THE WORLD’S MOST INNOVATIVE AND EFFECTIVE MARKETING & ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS
And more on: Social Purpose Communication, Do Good Awards, CSR + ESG …
An Interview with Gayle Seminara Mandel
SVP, Communications Director, New York Festivals
Gayle: What continues to inspire me is that great ideas really can come from anywhere and everywhere. Each and every region brings its own culture, experiences, and perspective to the work, and that diversity is what makes the global creative community so fascinating.
From my perspective at New York Festivals, when you bring together juries to judge work from around the world, you’re constantly reminded that there is no single recipe for creativity. The best ideas can catch you off guard, challenge you, make you laugh, touch your heart, or make you see in an entirely new way.
Gayle: Creative work doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and neither should the people who judge the work. Bringing together creative leaders from different cultures, disciplines, and markets creates a richer conversation around the work. Global juries bring diverse experiences and perspectives to the jury room, helping spotlight ideas that resonate far beyond their original market. That conversation challenges us to look at the work through different lenses and recognize creativity that might otherwise be overlooked.
Gayle: We need to give young people opportunities to be seen, heard, and taken seriously. That means creating more opportunities for them to meet working professionals, see exceptional work, ask questions, build relationships, and understand that there isn’t just one path into this industry or one way to excel. It’s important for those of us who are further along in our careers to be generous with what we’ve learned. And equally important, we need to remember that every generation has something to teach the next. The next generation of industry leaders will also teach us things we don’t know yet. Our curiosity and openness are key to our growth.
Gayle: I envision a future industry that is more inclusive, diverse, and open to ideas from everywhere and everyone. Advances in technology give more people access to tools that allow them to create, experiment, and bring their own ideas to life without a large company driving the outcome. This fosters individual creativity and innovation and opens the industry to a vibrant range of new voices and perspectives.
Brands and their messaging have also created more opportunities for consumers to engage, create content, and have a voice. It’s an exciting time when the ideas and creativity of consumers can find their way into brand messaging, creating more intimate connections between audiences and the brands they love.
Our countries and cultures may be uniquely our own, but as global humans, we connect through honest emotions, humor, and our desire to understand one another. I believe the future of the creative community will embrace that connection even more, reminding us of the importance of our shared humanity and what resonates across cultures.
Rajesh Mehta: Purpose-driven advertising is evolving in terms of effectiveness, by demonstrating ‘sustainable impact’. Providing evidence of success of ‘purpose driven’ initiatives on a consistent basis.
Bringing the purpose alive through varied components beyond communication. Like product design, corporate policies etc. to drive effectiveness.
Driving effectiveness through communication narratives that humanize the brand’s purpose.
Inspiring consumers to be part of a ‘purpose led movement’. Aided with technology (apps, gamification) and digital storytelling to make it more engaging.
Engaging varied stakeholders like internal employees, HCPs, bodies like Rotary and even the government, to partner with their purpose for more effective outcomes.
Rajesh Mehta: Human centered storytelling is what makes a campaign compelling and effective. Anchored on a strong insight, it creates emotional connections in an authentic manner. It makes the narrative more engaging and memorable.
Storytelling works across categories from food to technology, from B2C to B2B. Connecting with the human side of diverse audiences, be it a homemaker or an HCP (Health care Professional). How products impact lives is obviously more impactful than just communicating their technical specs or molecular composition.
Storytelling can also inspire action and behavior change. Esp in categories with strongly entrenched habits. For e.g Hand holding a smoker to quit vs telling facts about the perils of smoking.
There are varied elements that work together to make a campaign memorable or impactful. Like authenticity, relatability, distinctive visual or audio hooks, a strong call to action etc.
These can be particularly important in an environment where the rise of short-attention media formats is making it harder for brands to stand out.
Rajesh Mehta: Consumers are evolving at a fast pace and demanding more. AI and data analytics help brands in multiple ways.
Right from precise targeting that ensures the messages reach the most relevant audiences, to personalization of messaging. So that the audiences believe that brands truly understand their needs. Technology can also drive habit change through personalized solutions.
AI-powered predictive analytics can also help anticipate audience needs and have relevant conversations. Fitting into consumer journeys effortlessly. For e.g making diabetes patients aware of the benefits of also monitoring other health parameters proactively. At times timely diagnosis goes a long way in preventing serious illnesses.
Real-time campaign monitoring and optimization can lead to more effective outcomes.
Rajesh Mehta: Brands are leveraging influencers whose are aligned with their thinking and values. It is this authenticity which creates the required trust and the impact.
This not only includes big influencers but also micro-influencers who despite smaller followings have high engagement rates.
There are multiple effective approaches possible when it comes to Influencer Marketing. From sharing personal stories and exclusive offers via influencer channels to live interactions, promoting user-generated content (UGC). All of these can foster deeper consumer connections.
Rajesh Mehta: Brands are going beyond communication, and ‘walking the talk’ with their CSR programs. Doing so not only helps them make a real-life impact but brings credibility with the cause they are promoting.
It also helps communicate the CSR programs with more authenticity, sharing measurable outcomes, supported by data and real-world examples.
Initiatives that address local challenges and ensure relevance to communities. For e.g Adopt a village when it comes to nutrition, hygiene etc.
Brands partner with organizations that provide certifications, that reflect adherence to rigorous ethical standards and responsibility.
Brands also engage consumers to participate in challenges to solve social problems and support winning ideas with grants.
Gilda Valle: For me, one word: Value. Value that breaks free from price wars, value that redefines businesses with boldness, and value that delivers true meaning to people. Because real effectiveness isn’t just about selling—it’s about transforming.
Gilda Valle: The purpose is no longer a marketing stunt—it’s a business driver. The brands that win don’t use it for engagement; they build their entire model around it. The key? Brutal honesty, measurable impact, and purpose that drives profit, not just perception.
Gilda Valle: True CSR is not just a campaign; it is a commitment. Brands that genuinely create an impact don’t merely discuss their values—they integrate them into their business. When purpose influences decisions, the resulting impact is not strategic but rather a natural consequence.
“AI changes the approach by giving us a superpower: hard data and raw speed. It delivers structured processing” that frictionless ramp that accelerates the journey. But that is exactly where I draw the line. AI takes you right to the borderline. What happens next is entirely human: soul, imperfection, and above all, the bravery to choose a path with that data in hand. The machine provides the momentum, but you decide whether to leap ahead or stay behind watching others take the slide.”
Amanda Blackman: Award-winning advertising today should be relevant, resonant, and ultimately results-driven. It reflects a deep understanding of audience mindset, cultural context, and platform behavior—meeting people where they are with ideas that feel both timely and timeless.
The best work isn’t just creatively ambitious; it’s strategically sound. It moves people emotionally, sparks conversation, and above all drives measurable impact. At its core, effective advertising today lives at the intersection of storytelling, cultural fluency, and performance.
Amanda Blackman: Storytelling is the difference between a message people see and one they feel. In my experience, the most effective campaigns use narrative to create emotional stakes, build tension, and deliver a payoff—whether it’s a laugh, a gasp, or a moment of recognition. The structure doesn’t have to be traditional, but the elements are always there: a clear point of view, a human truth, and a reason to care. That’s what makes the work memorable—and what makes people act.
